Rustic Bird Houses For Your Garden
While some of the bright and decorative bird houses are appealing to the human eye, many of us would prefer our bird houses to blend in with the garden rather than stick out. As it happens, the birds themselves are likely to be less wary with a rustic bird house than one that is too bright and artistic.
Bird houses have traditionally been made of wood, although birds are quite capable of finding all sorts of odd places to raise their young. Wooden houses do blend in better with the average garden, and are more likely to attract birds quickly. Even so, they should still be put up well before the breeding season, so it weathers a bit and the local and visiting birds get used to it.
Bluebirds are one of the most popular US birds for atttracting to the garden to nest. The bird house shown left has been designed especially for bluebirds. It's simple design yet appealing design is also functional and practical. It's hinged door enables you to open to view and clean, while keeping out predators. In solid cypress wood, this bird house comes in grey (pictured above left), white, green or red.
Wrens too need specially designed bird houses for their tiny bodies. The traditionally designed wren box shown left retains its rustic charm even with the copper roof, which should still blend well in most gardens; kept out of full sun of course.
