Outdoor Planters

Also: Garden Planters, Lion Planters, Garden Planter Home

Growing plants in containers, or planters, is like a separate hobby for many people. Indeed, when I lived in England I took special pleasure from having a few outdoor planters and creating a special summer display for each. In that case they were used on a patio, but one of the beauties of using planters is that they can be used in different parts of the garden.

Concrete outside planter basin on pedestal

I have to admit that most of the plant containers I used in England were cheap plastic replicas. When they were flowing with flowers, that did not seem to matter too much. However, there is no doubting the greater attractiveness of outdoor planters made from concrete, aggregate and other high quality materials.

The old world basin (above left) has a vintage appeal and a classic garden container style. Such a planter can be used to add height almost anywhere in the garden. This example is made from a concrete aggregate mixed with high intensity fibres to give greater resilience and a lighter weight than pure concrete. Small concrete terra planter

If you find the colour uninspiring you can always opt for the terra cotta style planters, such as the small trough planter on the left. This is a traditional colour for pots, and its warm, rustic tones fit well in most gardens.

Apart from the flexibility of being able to place containers anywhere in the garden, they are also very useful because of the great variety of shapes and sizes. The possibilities are almost endless, but of course there are some traditional shapes that are expecially suitable fo planting, and are most likely to spring to mind when someone mentions planters.

Planter Grecian Classic

One of the classic shapes for a garden planter is the Grecian style shown on the left. While this is made from a concrete and fibre mesh aggregate, you can find similiar styles replicated in plastic. However, they can never be as effective of pure concrete or an aggregate such as the one shown.

Use outside planters wisely and they will certainly enhance the attractiveness of the garden. They may also give you a new hobby, too.
