Armillary Sundials
Sundials are one of the classic garden ornaments, going back many centuries, two millennia in fact, to a time when they had a practical as well as a decorative role in Greek civilization. Calling them ornaments, though, does not do them justice. An armillary sun dial sphere, for example, is one of the best marriages of science and art you will find; a mechanical masterpiece from a distant era.
The armillary sundial was developed by a Greek astronomer and philosopher Ptolemy. They are fascinating pieces of equipment, as well as being sculptures that would benefit almost any country garden. If you are looking for unusual garden decor, a real talking point that will fascinate your children and visitors alike, then a good quality armillary sphere is s superb option.
In the more modern era, Greenwich in London has been associated with the science of time for a very long time. As a south Londoner, I have memories of visiting Greenwich Park and the observatory many times. The first armillary pictured is a nice reminder of Greenwich as I recall from my childhood.

The armillary (left), on the other hand, is made of cast iron. While not so impressive an instrument as the Greenwich, it is also much cheaper, so if you are looking for a modestly priced Armillary sundial, this might be a good option for you. However, the distinctive and beautifully crafted greenwich is tempting.
Once you have bought your armillary, you will need a stand to place it on. The short stand left is aluminium with a Verdigris finish. However, there is an iron version with a weather finish to give an antique look with vintage appeal.
