More Armillary Sundials For Garden Decor Focal Points
Armillary sundials are amongst the most classic of what we now regard as garden decor. They are far more than decor, as an armillary is an ancient device which is used to display the relationships between the principal celestial circles. An armillary sphere shows the heavens as seen from Earth.

On an armillary sundial, the diagonal arrow running through the center is called the gnomen, or the piece that casts the shadow. The gnomen must be adjusted according to your location to give an accurate time reading.
You can see the gnomen in the sundial pictured left, which is an aluminum sundial. Compared to some, this is quite a cheap sundial, but impressive nonetheless, with its distressed verdigris finish giving it a classic appearance right from the day it appears in your garden.

The numbered half-circle around the outside of an armillary sundial is called the equatorial ring. This is where the shadow is cast to indicate time. You can clearly see the roman numerals on the equatorial ring of the brass sundial pictured left. This stylish armillary, more expensive than the first, perfectly contrasts the solid brass and verdigris highlights, making this a superb addition to your garden or yard decor.

Armillary sundials are more impressively displayed on a pedestal, which you can usually buy separately. You can sometimes buy the armillary sundial and the pedestal as a package, and the pairing shown left is one such package. This package includes a classic polished brass armillary sundial, paired with a column style stand. Called Roma, this package includes a brass armillary, a fluted column base and features Roman numerals on the armillary.
